I visited little UK town with 125 independent shops - 1 thing makes high street so special

This Devon town is unlike many across the UK, with a thriving high street buzzing with life on a Thursday afternoon. Having lived in a market town where, like so many across the UK, big brands have been replaced by boarded-up shops and smaller businesses are struggling, I was intrigued by how this little market town has managed to hold onto its thriving high street.

The UK lost almost 13,500 retail stores in 2024, which worked out at 37 shops a day, according to provisional figures compiled by the Centre for Retail Research. However, Totnes doesn't rely on big brands. In fact, more than 125 independent businesses serve a community of around 8,000 people, and you can buy practically anything you need on the high street despite the lack of big brands.

Crucially, everything is made with care. The butcher works with local farmers, shops offer Devonian handicrafts, the cafes cook up local food, and a brewery serves up delicious ales.

There's even a community cinema that feels like it has been pulled straight out of the 1920s, with small tables that stand in the shadow of the impressive stage like a theatre.

As soon as I arrived, I knew I wanted to return for a longer trip so I could explore the town properly. Even though it takes two hours and 40 minutes to get the train from London, I was sold on Totnes's charm.

I have always been a fan of high street shopping rather than online, because you get to see the product up close, and you don't have to mess around with returns.

However, it wasn't just the shops that drew me in. You can get to independent shops all over the country, and many towns are closer to London.

The reason I want to go back and experience the shopping in Totnes is due to the beauty and relaxing feel of the town, with its stunning waterfront location.

As we arrived at 8pm, locals were dotted along the river at pubs, cafes and green spaces taking in the last of the summer sun, and I felt instantly relaxed walking into the town centre.

Even though there are direct links from London, it is just far enough away to not feel overcrowded, and the community was so friendly. It felt a world away from bustling city life. It's well worth a weekend trip.
