Here we are talking about all time classic film Nikaah directed by Late B.R. Chopra and released in 1982 whose storyline had emotional depth that was powerfully carried by strong ensemble cast. Actress Salma Agha who not only made her acting debut as Niloufer but also sang some of the film’s most iconic songs and became rising star. She was joined by Raj Babbar playing Wasim a wealthy and authoritative man and Deepak Parashar as Afaque a sensitive poet and Niloufers first husband. Initially titled Talaq Talaq Talaq it faced objections from religious groups forcing a name change to Nikaah. It also triggered 34 legal cases across India accusing the makers of misrepresenting Islamic laws. Despite this B.R. Chopra stood by his vision defending the film’s intention to highlight women’s plight in patriarchal systems. How was the box office reception? Made on a modest budget of around Rs 4 crore Nikaah emerged as a box office success earning over Rs 9 crore which garnered it 225% profit. It was one of the most talked-about and commercially successful films of 1982. Its music especially “Dil Ke Armaan” and “Faza Bhi Hai Jawaan Jawaan” played a key role in its popularity and longevity in theatres. Later Salma Agha won Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer for “Dil Ke Armaan.” The film also received praise for its screenplay direction and progressive theme.
