Mumbai: Santan Saptami is a deeply significant vrat observed by Hindu devotees for the well-being, longevity, and prosperity of their children. According to the Hindu calendar, it falls on the seventh day (Saptami tithi) of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada. This fast is believed to remove obstacles from a child’s life and bless them with good health and happiness.

On this day, devotees wake up at sunrise, take a holy bath, and make a vow to observe the fast. During the puja, special prayers are offered to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati and Lord Krishna.

Significance of santan saptami vrat

The vrat is directly linked to protecting and nurturing children. It is believed that parents who perform this vrat never face childlessness, while couples seeking offspring are blessed with children. Parents also observe it to ensure the long life, good fortune, and health of their sons and daughters.

Puja vidhi (rituals to follow)

Take a morning bath, wear clean clothes and make a vrat sankalp (pledge).

Install idols or pictures of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.

Place an image of Lord Surya (Sun God) in the puja space.

Offer arghya to Surya with water, red flowers, rice grains, and seven types of grains.

Worship Goddess Satvati and Saptamatrika.

Offer sandalwood paste, rice, flowers, incense, lamp and naivedya.

Listen to or recite the Santan Saptami Vrat Katha.

Break the fast after sunset and donate food and clothes to Brahmins or the needy.

The legend behind santan saptami

As per the mythological tale, a queen lost all seven of her children at a young age. In despair, she sought guidance from a sage, who advised her to observe the Santan Saptami vrat dedicated to Goddess Satvati. With deep devotion, the queen kept the fast and was later blessed with a healthy and long-lived son. Since then, this vrat has been observed to protect children and ensure their longevity.

Astrological importance

In astrology, the Saptami tithi is dedicated to Surya Dev (the Sun God), who is considered the giver of life and health. Fasting and worship on this day pacify negative planetary influences, remove obstacles to progeny, and bring positive energy to a child’s life. For those with Pitru dosha or issues to childbearing in their horoscope, this vrat is considered highly beneficial.

Remedies on Santan Saptami for child’s welfare

Offer water to a Peepal tree while praying for your child’s long life.

Feed young children and gift them red clothes.

Offer jaggery and wheat to Surya Dev.
