Noida (Uttar Pradesh) [India], August 16: The Universal Pickleball Association (UPA) is set to host its inaugural Independence Cup Pickleball Tournament on Sunday, August 17. This event aims to foster a sense of patriotism and promote an active lifestyle, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for a Fit India.


The tournament will take place at Pickleplay in Sector 121, Noida, featuring over 100 participants competing across 11 age categories, ranging from Under-14 to 60-plus. More than 150 matches are planned at this newly established venue, which is responding to the growing interest in pickleball. Additionally, the tournament boasts a cash prize of Rs 66,000 (Rs 6000 per category) and attractive gifts for the top three finishers in each category.


Founded in October 2022 by a group of dedicated sports enthusiasts, the UPA's mission is to promote and expand the sport of pickleball throughout Uttar Pradesh, as stated in a press release from the association.


Kumar K, President of UPA, expressed pride in the association's journey, stating, “Reflecting on the Universal Pickleball Association's journey fills me with gratitude. We have successfully organized over 40 boot camps across Uttar Pradesh, raising awareness and establishing a solid foundation for pickleball. Furthermore, we have hosted more than 30 tournaments, ranging from local events to larger competitions, attracting passionate participants nationwide.”


He continued, “With the Independence Cup, we are taking another significant step. This tournament is not merely a competition; it contributes to the vision of a developed India by 2047, as envisioned by our Prime Minister. He has emphasized that a healthy society is essential for a prosperous nation, and through sports like pickleball, we are making that vision a reality.”


The UPA highlights the inclusive nature of pickleball, making it accessible to all age groups, which aligns perfectly with their mission.


Jyoti Dang Kandhari, a 54-year-old participant in the 50-plus category, shared her experience: “I discovered pickleball in December 2023 during a UPA boot camp in my community. Since then, with UPA's support, I have achieved several milestones, including winning gold in women's doubles at the Noida Pickleball Nationals and a bronze in mixed doubles, along with multiple medals in state tournaments.”


Prabhat Mani Vats, UPA Secretary, expressed gratitude towards the government for encouraging health initiatives. He noted, “Our players have consistently excelled in national and international competitions, bringing pride to Uttar Pradesh. Looking ahead, UPA has already set up district-level associations in 3-4 districts and plans to expand to 7-8 more this year, enhancing the sport's infrastructure and promoting grassroots growth.”


UPA's mission is clear: to reach every district in Uttar Pradesh and spread the joy of pickleball while promoting fitness and health for everyone.
