In advanced kidney disease, the body retains fluid which leads to swelling, while also causing neck veins to become affected. When heart and kidney systems face challenges, veins in the neck become noticeable through enlargement or bulging. Excessive fluid in the body creates blood vessel pressure elevation, which leads to this condition known as jugular vein distention. A swollen or protruding vein located on the neck’s side, becomes visible when someone lies down or experiences physical strain. The appearance of any abnormal vein swelling or bulging in the neck, requires immediate medical assessment because it indicates severe fluid imbalances and organ distress.
