Pargat Singh, the former captain of the Indian hockey team, expressed his concerns regarding the nation's treatment of its sports icons. He remarked, “While we excel at celebrating our heroes, we often neglect their well-being,” during the unveiling of veteran journalist Sundeep Misra’s latest book.
The book, titled ‘Gunned Down — Murder of An Olympic Champion,’ delves into the life and tragic demise of hockey great Prithipal Singh.
Prithipal, renowned for his expertise in penalty corners, secured three Olympic medals, including a gold in 1964. Tragically, he was murdered on the campus of Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana in 1983.
Pargat, who also specialized in penalty corners, regarded Prithipal as a role model. He praised his extraordinary dedication and winning mindset, stating, “His commitment was phenomenal and his mentality was that of a winner.”
