A 13-year-old girl whose body was found at a flat in Huddersfield earlier this week has been named and pictured for the first time. Casey-Louise was found unresponsive at a flat in the West Yorkshire town on Monday, August 11. She was taken to hospital, but died in the early hours of Tuesday, August 12.
A rape and murder investigation was launched by police. The 13-year-old, originally from Manchester, was named in a moving tribute from a family member shared on social media. They wrote: "Suddenly and totally unexpected, on Tuesday 12th August, our beautiful Casey-Louise gained her angel winds [sic]. Our family is absolutely devastated by this news. Can you please respect our privacy and give us time to grieve as a family."
Another relative added: "Rest in peace little girl. Casey-Louise, forever 13."
West Yorkshire Police arrested a 16-year-old boy earlier this week on suspicion of rape and murder and a separate rape offence relating to a 16-year-old girl. He has since been released on conditional bail.
The force said detectives are still working to understand the circumstances of Casey-Louise's death, which is being treated as unexplained after a post-mortem failed to establish how she died.
DCI Stacey Atkinson of the Homicide and Major Enquiry Team said on Thursday: "We are continuing to conduct a number of enquiries following the death of a 13-year-old girl following an incident at a flat on Sheepridge Road.
"A post-mortem was not able to determine how she died and we continue to treat her death as unexplained at this time, pending more enquiries.
"Those enquiries are complex and are likely to be lengthy as we work to fully understand the circumstances of the girl's death. Specially trained officers are supporting her family at this time."
Huddersfield MP Harpreet Uppal said: "This is a tragic case and my thoughts remain with the 13-year-old teenager and her family and friends. I have been in contact with the police and I am being updated on the investigation."
