Sleep is often given the last priority in a runaway life. It has become common to spend time on mobile phones, TV or laptops till late night. But do you know that the habit of getting less sleep can give rise to serious illness like diabetes?

According to experts, not getting enough sleep affects the body’s metabolism, which can cause imbalance in the blood sugar level. This situation is even more dangerous for those who are already in diabetes or pre-dibitic position.

What is the relationship between sleep and sugar level?

“Sleep plays an important role in maintaining the body’s hormonal balance. When a person does not take enough sleep, the stress hormone increases ‘cortisol’. This reduces the insulin sensitivity of the body and increases blood sugar.”

Studies show that the risk of type-2 diabetes in people with less than 6 hours of sleep increases by 30–40% daily.

How does less sleep affect blood sugar?
1. Insulin Resistance Increase

Lack of sleep makes the body’s cells less sensitive to insulin. As a result, the absorption of glucose is not done properly and the sugar level increases.

2. Hungry hormones are activated

When sleep is not complete, ‘ghralin’ (hungry hormone) becomes active, while ‘leptin’ (hormone hormone) is reduced. This makes the person eat excessively, especially sweet and junk food, which further enhances the sugar level.

3. Stress and Cortisol level

Lack of sleep increases stress, increasing cortisol hormone levels. This hormone indicates liver to release more glucose.
