Newcastle shoot themselves in the foot as big agents raise concerns over future transfers

Newcastle United could be facing a transfer backlash following the Alexander Isak debacle. The Toon Army are keen to bring in reinforcements, with Paris Saint-Germain striker Goncalo Ramos being eyed as a potential new arrival. This would allow Newcastle to capitalise on the unsettled striker Isak, who is being pursued by Liverpool.

However, there are concerns among leading agents that if Newcastle continue to play hardball over Isak, it could set a concerning precedent for future targets. Top strikers always want assurance that if they excel and succeed, they will be allowed to progress to a bigger club. Isak has made his desire to leave Newcastle clear and with fans turning against him, an unsightly stand-off appears imminent.

This could deter future targets, as seeing Newcastle obstruct potential progress could raise red flags for high-profile strikers.

The Magpies have already missed out on Benjamin Sesko, Joao Pedro and Hugo Ekitike, who have signed for Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool respectively.

Ramos, 24, isn't a regular starter at PSG and Newcastle's previous attempt to sign him earlier in the window was unsuccessful. Despite the Portugal striker seemingly committing his future to PSG last week, Newcastle remain in pursuit but big names will likely demand assurances.

Newcastle are competing in the Champions League but they have found it challenging to lure major signings this summer and the Isak situation could be a contributing factor.

While nobody anticipates that Newcastle will simply capitulate and offload their star players, they are playing tough over Isak following Liverpool's rejected £120million bid.

Isak has insisted he had a deal in place permitting his departure this summer, but the club are standing resolute. Liverpool are only expected to return if Newcastle secure replacements and the Reds are prepared to increase their bid.

However, Isak was omitted from Newcastle's opening match against Aston Villa on Saturday, leaving manager Eddie Howe confronting a striker shortage.

The Magpies are also pursuing Brentford winger Yoane Wissa to strengthen their attacking capabilities, but the Bees are demanding more than £60m and Newcastle have made little progress towards meeting that figure.

Brentford remain reluctant to sell despite Wissa being absent from their loss at Nottingham Forest on Sunday.

After Newcastle's goalless draw with Aston Villa on Saturday, Howe said: "Nothing has changed. The door is well and truly open. He [Isak] has to decide what he wants to do.

"We would like a resolution. We need that clarity. You don't need any kind of distraction. I am not in control of that.

"There is one person who can control that. Let's wait and see. I have made my stance clear. I am concentrating on the team."
