Newcastle United's pursuit of Brentford star Yoane Wissa has been dealt a blow, according to a recent report. The Magpies have been rumoured to be keen on securing Wissa's services this summer as they aim to bolster their attacking line-up, especially in light of Callum Wilson's exit and the uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak's future.
Eddie Howe and Co. have been hoping to secure at least one new forward before the September 1 deadline. The transfer of Dango Ouattara from Bournemouth to Brentford was expected to allow Newcastl to sign Wissa. Brentford were reportedly seeking a £40million fee for Wissa, but a new development could impact the Magpies' plans.
According to talkSPORT, Brentford are stopping Wissa's move to Newcastle from taking place, even after signing Ouattara over the weekend. It is suggested that Brentford are now demanding £60million for Wissa, marking a 50% increase from their initial asking price.
It is claimed that the only way Brentford would allow Wissa to join Newcastle for the previously quoted £40m fee is if they manage to sign a replacement first. Ouattara is believed to have been brought in to fill the void left by Bryan Mbeumo, who made a £71m switch to Manchester United earlier this summer, reports Chronicle Live.
Brentford are said to be confident that Wissa will remain at the club, despite Newcastle showing interest. The 28-year-old was absent from the matchday squad as Brentford suffered a 3-1 defeat to Nottingham Forest over the weekend, leaving Bees manager Keith Andrews uncertain about the final outcome of the situation.
"It's a day-by-day one in terms of Wiss," Andrews said after the defeat at the City Ground over the weekend. "As far as I know, nothing else has happened today, definitely didn't yesterday, so as it was really.
"I have no idea what the situation will be, I've been up here since yesterday so we will deal with that during the week. Hopefully it can resolve itself sooner rather than later."
Brentford will take on Aston Villa on Saturday in their next Premier League fixture. It remains to be seen if Wissa will return to the matchday squad or complete a move to Newcastle before that match.
Newcastle have been linked with a host of strikers this summer, including Wissa. Nicolas Jackson of Chelsea, Ollie Watkins of Villa and Goncalo Ramos of Paris Saint-Germain are just some of the names to be linked with a move to St James' Park.
