In a rare but refreshing approach to sports administration in India, the Indian Pickleball Association (IPA) has handed the reins of leadership to those who know the game best, accomplished athletes and coaches.
By placing sportspersons at the forefront, the IPA is also ensuring that pickleball's growth in India is guided by experience, expertise, and a genuine passion for the sport. IPA Takes Strides Forward Leading the charge is President Suryaveer Singh Bhullar, who is not only a seasoned administrator but also the current 50+ Men's Doubles National Champion. With numerous medals at both the international and national levels, his expertise provides a clear vision for the sport's future. He is joined by Aalap Sharma, the IPA's Treasurer, a former National Men's Singles Champion and top-ranked tennis player. Aalap's background as a certified coach and a software professional brings a blend of athletic insight and strategic thinking to the board. The team also includes Dhiren Patel, a prominent member of the executive board and the National Coach for India. A US Open Gold Medalist and a dominant force in the 35+ age category in India, Dhiren is credited with developing champions at the IPA National Center of Excellence in Ahmedabad. The IPA's commitment to its philosophy, player-first, is further highlighted by the inclusion of other distinguished athletes, such as former Olympian and Asian Games Silver medalist in tennis Vishnu Vardhan, former India tennis players Vivek Showkeen, Visakh VS, and Dilip Mohanty (also a certified PPR coach), former India squash player Farid Singh, and Rahul Belwal, the current 35+ Men's Singles National Champion in Pickleball who also formerly represented India in tennis. The association is also championing inclusivity, with a strong presence of women on the executive board. These members include Amrita Mukherjee, the current Women's Singles National Champion and a former Indian tennis representative; Nazneen Rahman, who has represented India in tennis and is now one of the top women players in 50+ Pickleball; and prominent actor Raima Sen. This unique leadership structure, composed of individuals who have excelled both on and off the court, assures the pickleball community that the sport is in the right hands. The remarkable progress achieved by the IPA for the growth and development of Pickleball in India is a testament to the effectiveness of this approach.
