PM Internship Scheme: The central government on Monday (August 18) informed the Lok Sabha that many applicants are not accepting the offers given in the pilot project of the Prime Minister's Internship Scheme (PMIS) due to reasons such as location and duration of internship.

The scheme, which was announced in the 2024-25 budget, aims to provide internship opportunities to 1 crore youth in the top 500 companies of the country in the next five years. The scheme is being run by the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.

Figures of the Prime Minister's Internship Project

In the first round, which started in October 2024, 280 companies offered more than 1.27 lakh internship opportunities.

During this period, about 6.21 lakh applications were received from 1.81 lakh candidates.

Companies made more than 82,000 offers, of which about 28,000 candidates accepted, and more than 8,700 started internships.

The second round began in January 2025, with 327 companies offering over 1.18 lakh internship opportunities. 4.55 lakh applications were received from over 2.14 lakh candidates.

As of August 12, 2025, companies made over 82,000 offers, of which over 24,000 youth accepted the offer and started the internship.

The government gave the reasons for rejection.

Union Minister of State Harsh Malhotra said that based on the feedback survey conducted by the ministry, outbound calls of the call center and responses received from various stakeholders, it has been found that the main reasons for applicants not accepting the offer or not joining the internship are:

Location problem

Duration of internship

Continuing higher education

The ministry has said that the scheme will be fully expanded based on the feedback received during the pilot project, consultation with stakeholders, and evaluation of results. More than 3.38 lakh candidates have registered by completing their profiles in the first round and more than 3.46 lakh candidates have registered in the second round.
