On Wednesday, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw presented the Online Gaming Bill in the Lok Sabha, despite ongoing protests from the Opposition. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, received approval through a voice vote.
The Union Minister highlighted that the primary goal of this legislation is to foster online social gaming and esports.
This bill explicitly bans all types of online money gaming, irrespective of whether they rely on skill, chance, or a mix of both. Nevertheless, it permits esports and social games that operate on a subscription basis. The Cabinet had previously endorsed the legislation before its introduction.
The Online Gaming Bill 2025 aims to eliminate online games that involve monetary stakes, addressing issues such as potential financial losses and addiction.
