Railways luggage rules: The Indian Railways has implemented new luggage rules limiting the quantity of luggage passengers travelling on AC or non-AC tickets can book on the train. What are the new Railways luggage rules? As per an order issued by Joint Director Passenger Marketing of Railway Board Rohit Kumar domestic and non-domestic or business goods can be booked in parcel only up to the prescribed limit adding that domestic goods can be booked in a larger quantity compared to business goods. However the Railways can offer exemption in cases where a government employee has been transferred and needs to shift to another part of the country. In such cases the passengers will be allowed to carry household items above the prescribed capacity limit. The new facility which will be available till June 30 2026 is also designed to benefit passengers of trains whose halt at stations last less than five minutes. How much luggage can passengers book? According to the order passengers travelling on AC tickets can carry household or domestic goods up to 1000 kg while those with a non-AC ticket can book 500 kg of household goods. The new rules also allow passengers to book their their luggage in parcels for the stations where the trains halt. Story Highlights The Indian Railways has set new limits on how much luggage passengers can book. Exemptions will be offered in transfer cases of government officials. The facility is available on both AC and non-AC booking. Passengers can book a lesser quantity of business goods. Notably the order comes amid North Central Railways Prayagraj division announcing that it will levy charges on passengers carrying luggage beyond prescribed weight limits and install baggage scanners at stations to curb carriage of narcotics and other prohibited items. As per the order passengers in AC first class will be allowed 70 kg of luggage free of charge AC second class 50 kg AC third and sleeper class 40 kg and general class 30 kg while any excess luggage will attract a fee. The system will be rolled out in phases beginning with Prayagraj and Chheoki Junctions by October-November before being extended to other stations.
