In Bengaluru, Karnataka, BJP State President Vijayendra Yediyurappa has stated that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar should be held accountable for the tragic stampede that occurred on June 4 outside Chinnaswamy Stadium during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL victory celebrations.
The stampede resulted in the loss of 11 lives and left many others injured, as an overwhelming crowd of approximately 300,000 gathered to celebrate the Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first IPL championship.
A two-member bench from the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) noted that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) was "responsible" for attracting a crowd of "about three to five lakhs" outside their home ground.
Yediyurappa criticized the state government for organizing the event, asserting, "The government has taken action against police officials... The tragedy that led to the deaths of 11 innocent individuals was a decision made by the state government, not the police. It was CM Siddaramaiah who decided to hold the celebration outside Vidhana Soudha, despite police requests for more time to manage the event. The responsibility lies with CM Siddaramaiah and DK Shivakumar," he told reporters.
Last month, the CAT reprimanded RCB for proceeding with the celebration without securing the necessary permissions from the police.
The tribunal's ruling emphasized that neither the franchise nor its event management partner, S DNA Entertainment Network Private Limited, had obtained the required approvals for the title celebration parade at the stadium.
The CAT's decision defended the police, stating they are "human beings" and do not possess the extraordinary abilities of a magician or mythical figures capable of instantly resolving issues.
