The Supreme Court on Tuesday (July 22) during the hearing of a case related to alimony, commented that qualified and educated women should earn for their livelihood and avoid asking husband interim alimony.

Chief Justice of India BR Gawai reprimanded a woman and said, "You are so educated. You should not ask for yourself and you should earn yourself.

According to media reports, this case was related to a woman who asked for a house in Mumbai and Rs 12 crore as a living allowance when separated from her husband after 18 months of marriage. In response, the Chief Justice said, "You are an IT professional. You have made an MBA. Your demand is in Bengaluru, Hyderabad ... Why don't you work?"

"18 months marriage, demanded home in Mumbai and 12 crores

He further said, "Your marriage lasted only 18 months, and now you also want BMW?" The woman justified her claims and said that her husband is "very rich" and demanded to declare the marriage zero, claiming that she was mentally unhealthy. To this, the Chief Justice said, "Either you get a flat free from all obstacles or nothing. When you are highly educated and decide not to work on your own free will."

In March this year, the Delhi High Court also expressed equal opinion in a similar case. The court said that law does not promote laziness and qualified women, who have the ability to earn, should avoid asking for alimony. Justice Chandra Dhari Singh said on March 19 that Section 125 (order of maintenance of wives, children and parents) of the Criminal Procedure Code is aimed at maintaining equality between husband and wife and giving protection to wives, children and parents, but it does not encourage "laziness".

The High Court, while delivering the verdict in another case, said, "A well -educated wife, who has a suitable job experience, should not only be lazy to obtain alimony from husband. Therefore, interim alimony is being discouraged in this case as the court looks at the petitioner's ability to earn using her education."
