In Nepal, thousands of women go to temples like Pashupatinath in Kathmandu on the day of Teej fast in Nepal, praying and blessing Lord Shiva. She keeps fasting as a symbol of her devotion to God and the hope of a pleasant marital life, often sacrificing food and water.

Regarding this fast, a devotee of Pashupatinath temple says that, Kopila Shivkoti said, “When Goddess Parvati was eight years old, she kept a fast to marry Lord Shiva. According to the same legend, women have been observing fast for centuries for centuries.”

The importance of singing and dancing is on Hartalika Teej fast

Hartalika Teej Vrat, is one of the most special Teej fast, it is considered a celebration of femininity and perseverance. Along with observing this fast in Nepal, women sing and dance traditional Teej songs at public intersections along with visiting temples. These songs give them an opportunity to express their feelings, share stories of their struggles and join each other. Songs sung on Teej fast are often a mixture of pain and hope, highlighting the collective power and unity of women. According to special tradition in Nepal, Hartalika Teej is said to be a day before the fast, ‘Dar Din Din Din’. This tradition is a symbol of cooperation and love of their families before starting the fast.

What is the makeup of Nepali women

The makeup of Nepali women on Hartalika Teej is quite different from Indian women. On the day of Teej fast, women wear red sarees and decorate with bangles, ‘pots’ (a necklace made of glass beads) and ‘vermilion’, which symbolize marital happiness and good luck. Throughout the day, women participate in various rituals, such as bathing, lighting lamps and worshiping Lord Shiva. On the last day, called ‘Rishi Panchami’, women perform purification rituals, including bathing with 108 stems of ‘Datiwan’ (a holy plant) and worship of ‘Saptarishis’ (seven sages). By completing these rituals, women try to purify their body and mind, which ends their fast.
