Bargain Hunt contestants found themselves "under pressure" as they were compelled to make a final-minute purchase that left their expert thoroughly unimpressed.

The BBC daytime programme returned with presenter Natasha Raskin Sharp once again at the helm as two fresh red and blue teams attempted to discover the finest bargains at a Newark market.

Mother and son duo Esther and Gobi were paired with Bargain Hunt expert Izzie Balmer and appeared to get off to a promising beginning when they purchased a vintage set of playing cards for merely £30.

Esther had initially set her sights on some royal-themed plates but then a collection of solid brass and onyx-topped tables captured her attention.

When questioned about her thoughts on the tables, Balmer remarked: "At the moment, the popular furniture tends to be your mid 20th Century Scandinavian furniture so you're going for that clean modern look.

"These don't quite fit that look but obviously not everyone loves the 1950s, 1960s style."

She subsequently added: "Not going to lie, they're not to my taste."

The vendor indicated he would release them for £70 but Izzie cautioned: "So if these are at £70, that doesn't meet our big spend item which doesn't matter, we can still get these and then we'd still need to get a big spend."

Gobi and Esther decided to place the tables on the "back burner" at this juncture but time was rapidly running out.

"Right then you two, to make money, we actually have to buy some items", Izzie declared. Gobi declared: "I know, I know, we're under pressure!"

She continued: "We had a chat 10 minutes ago so we have 20 minutes left. We still only have one item."

The trio then devised a strategy where Esther would take responsibility for locating the £75 or more item whilst Gobi would hunt for the third and final piece.

Esther selected a gold-plated locket for £75 but there were merely five minutes remaining to discover one more.

"What are we going to do?", Izzie enquired.

Esther responded: "We've got the plates, haven't we?", to which the expert said: "Well, you love the plates Esther. We do appear to be walking back in that direction.

"It's drawn to me!", Esther laughed.

However, in a surprising twist, the duo returned to the nest of tables where Gobi was "really, really, really cheeky" and requested the price be reduced from £70 to £65.

Their wish was granted and Izzie rejoiced: "That's it! We have got three items! Well done!".

It's evident she didn't support the choice though as she observed: "Still can't quite believe we've bought some hideous tables but you like them!"

Esther pressed her finger to her lips as she declared: "Ssh! I love them! Not just like them, I love them."

Gobi chuckled: "They're not my cup of tea, that's why I wanted the best price on them."

Yet it emerged that Izzie was correct as despite Esther's optimism, when it came to the auction, there were initially no bids until they sold for just £30, which she described as "awful".

Gobi and Esther's remaining items performed poorly as well, leaving them £80 down until Izzie's bonus buy of a vintage double-ended scent bottle generated a £10 profit.

It came as little shock when the Red team was declared victorious with merely an £18 loss, prompting Natasha to remark: "There's no losers, just runners-ups."

Bargain Hunt is available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
