A new research has revealed the world's "most beautiful" cruise port is located in a spectacular European gem. Valletta, the picturesque capital of Malta, has been named the most visually stunning port to arrive at by cruise ship, according to a unique study using eye-tracking technology.

The survey, conducted by AllClear Travel Insurance with 100 cruise enthusiasts, aimed to identify the world's most scenic ports and Valletta secured the top spot. Perched between two natural harbours-Grand Harbour and Marsamxett Harbour-Valletta is a powerhouse of history, culture and architectural beauty.

Tourists are often captivated by its golden-hued architecture and centuries-old landmarks, making it a favourite for day-trippers exploring its historic streets. Located about 50 miles south of Sicily, Malta is frequently referred to as "Europe's Caribbean" due to its crystal-clear waters and sandy beaches.

Valletta, Malta's capital, was established in 1566 by the Order of St. John and named in honour of Jean Parisot de Valette, the Grand Master who valiantly defended the island during the Great Siege of 1565. The city is celebrated for its striking Baroque architecture, robust fortifications and a thoughtfully designed grid-like street plan that channels refreshing sea breezes through its narrow lanes.

Often referred to as an "open-air museum," Valletta boasts an extraordinary concentration of over 320 historical monuments within its compact area, including the magnificent St. John's Co-Cathedral, which features a renowned painting by Caravaggio. Since being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980, Valletta has flourished not only as Malta's political and economic heart but also as a lively hub for culture, cuisine and the timeless allure of the Mediterranean.

One of the travellers wrote on TripAdvisor forum: "Visiting it is even more beautiful than it appears from photos, videos and reviews. An incredible concentration of historical, artistic and cultural sites and riches make it resemble a small Italy. Beautiful and very much alive Valletta! Definitely worth a visit!"

Another traveller shared: "More beautiful than I expected, ancient, medieval, narrow streets characteristic, sometimes steep, nose up to observe the balconies, as well as being colorful.... neat, clean, with amazing engineering works (rainwater drainage near the doors on the sidewalks), imposing perimeter walls...... and its charm strikes the soul!"

A third said: "The city of Valletta is so historic with history from medieval times when the knights of Malta built the city to the time of British Malta.

"If you are going to visit Valletta I highly recommend you use the local public buses to travel to the medieval capital city of Valletta. Valletta is a wonderful medieval city with so much to see and do."
