One of his close friends confirmed his death, stating that Joy had COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). He was admitted to Medica Hospital in Kolkata on 15 August, but was discharged on August 16 after improving the condition. However, as soon as he reached home, his health started deteriorating again. On August 17, his position became serious and he was placed on a ventilator.
