Gold Buying Tips: Cases of gold adulteration are on the rise these days. Many jewelers sell lower-carat gold while claiming it to be of higher purity. This kind of fraud can happen to anyone. That’s why it is very important to verify whether the gold you are paying for is actually pure or not.
5 Tips To Check Purity Of Gold
1. BIS Standard Mark
Always check for the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mark when buying gold jewelry. The BIS logo appears in the shape of a triangle and is the primary hallmark that confirms the jewelry has been tested for purity at a BIS-certified center. If your jewelry has this mark it guarantees authenticity and quality.
2. Hallmark On Gold
Every genuine gold ornament carries a hallmark that shows its purity. Never buy gold jewelry without this stamp. The hallmark specifies how pure the gold is measured in karats (K). The higher the karat the purer the gold. For example 22K or 24K gold contains a higher percentage of pure gold making it more valuable.
3. HUID Code
Look for the Hallmark Unique Identification (HUID) code which is the third important mark on gold jewelry. It is a unique 6-character alphanumeric code (e.g. A123BC B456CD). Each piece of jewelry has a different HUID code. Buyers can verify this code on the BIS Care App under the “Verify HUID” feature. This ensures that the gold you are buying is authentic and matches the certified purity level.
4. Invoice / Authentic Bill
Always ask for a proper bill when buying gold jewelry. Local jewelers in smaller towns may not always provide genuine purity even if the jewelry has a BIS mark hallmark and HUID code. Some even use fake hallmarks. A proper bill includes the jeweler’s GST number which you can verify on the official GST website (services.gst.gov.in/services/searchtp).
