Synopsis

Trinamool Congress legislator Jiban Krishna Saha was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday concerning alleged irregularities in the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment process in West Bengal. Saha, previously arrested by the CBI in 2023 for the same scam, attempted to evade arrest during the ED raid but was apprehended after a brief chase.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday arrested Trinamool Congress legislator Jiban Krishna Saha in connection with alleged irregularities in the School Service Commission (SSC) recruitment process in West Bengal.

Saha was produced in a court in Kolkata and remanded to six-day police custody.

The arrest, the second time since 2023 in connection with the same matter, followed a five hour-long raid by the ED at his house in Murshidabad and that of his in-laws and other relatives.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had arrested Saha in connection with the same scam in 2023.

According to sources, Saha jumped from the first floor of his residence during the ED raid and tried to scale the boundary wall to evade arrest, but he was caught by the ED team.

Saha had also thrown his second phone into a drain, but it was recovered by officials.

In 2023, when CBI officials had come to arrest Saha, he reportedly had thrown his mobile phone into a pond. Divers were deployed to recover the phone.

The federal agency’s raid at Saha’s house was part of coordinated raids conducted at multiple places across the state. Saha has been accused of refusing to cooperate with the investigation into the matter.
