On Monday, V Narayanan, the chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), emphasized the crucial role played by the agency's satellites during Operation Sindoor, executed by the Armed Forces in May. Speaking at a felicitation event for IAF Group Captain and astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla in Lucknow, Narayanan revealed that India currently operates 58 satellites in orbit.
He stated, “I want to highlight that all our satellites performed exceptionally well during Operation Sindoor. They were instrumental in ensuring the safety and security of every citizen in Bharat. Prime Minister Modi has directed that within three years, the number of operational satellites will increase to at least three times the current count of 58.”
Initiated on May 7, 2025, in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the deaths of 26 civilians, Operation Sindoor was a meticulously planned tri-services operation aimed at dismantling terrorist infrastructure along the Line of Control and deeper within Pakistan. An official release from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, dated May 14, acknowledged ISRO's significant contributions to this operation.
According to the release, Narayanan mentioned on May 11 that at least 10 satellites are continuously operational for strategic purposes to safeguard the nation. He noted, “To protect the country, we must utilize our satellites to monitor our 7,000 km coastline and continuously observe the northern regions.”
“Without satellite and drone technology, achieving these objectives is impossible,” he added. Narayanan also announced that India aims to establish its own space station by 2035 and plans to send an Indian astronaut to the Moon by 2040. “We are developing a rocket to facilitate this mission, as directed by PM Modi,” he stated.
He praised Group Captain Shubanshu Shukla as a source of national pride, expressing joy over his safe return. Narayanan acknowledged the Prime Minister's vision and the efforts of over 500 ISRO personnel who contributed to the Gaganyaan program. “This experience will be invaluable for Gaganyaan, as it builds confidence and provides essential training,” he remarked.
On the same day, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met with Group Captain Shukla, who recently participated in the historic Axiom 4 Mission to the International Space Station. Shukla also attended a felicitation ceremony at his former school, City Montessori School in Gomtinagar.
