Ahmedabad, Aug 26: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is currently on a two-day visit to his home state of Gujarat, where he inaugurated the 'Made in India' e-Vitara, marking the debut of Suzuki's first global strategic Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) on Tuesday.
The inauguration event was attended by Gujarat's Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel and Japan's Ambassador, Keiichi Ono.
This rollout of 'Made-in-India' BEVs signifies a significant step towards self-reliance and highlights India's ambitious goals for transitioning to green energy.
Prior to flagging off the e-Vitara, PM Modi described the occasion as a 'special day' in India's journey towards self-sufficiency and announced that production of hybrid battery electrodes will soon commence at a facility in Gujarat, enhancing the country's battery ecosystem.
These 'Made in India' BEVs are set to be exported to over a hundred countries, including advanced markets like Europe and Japan.
Additionally, PM Modi will launch the next phase of India's battery ecosystem with the local production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant in Gujarat. This facility, a collaboration between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki, aims to promote domestic manufacturing and innovation in clean energy.
These two significant projects highlight India's rise as a global center for green mobility and reinforce the Prime Minister's commitment to initiatives like 'Make in India' and 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat'.
The e-Vitara was first introduced in Europe late last year, with Maruti Suzuki unveiling it during the Bharat Mobility Global Expo in January 2025.
With an annual production capacity of 2.6 million units across four plants in India, the company exported over 332,000 vehicles and sold 1.9 million units domestically in FY25.
The commencement of commercial production of the e-Vitara at the Hansalpur plant in Gujarat positions India as Suzuki's global manufacturing hub for electric vehicles.
