New Delhi: Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni have been two of the most successful captains in Indian cricket history. While Dhoni won all three major white-ball trophies Kohli became Indias most successful Test captain. Both have scored over 10000 runs in ODIs but Kohli has proved to be slightly better in Test cricket. Dhoni never scored a century abroad while 14 of Kohlis 30 Test centuries came overseas. However the situation was different in the beginning. Early comparison of Kohli and Dhoni In the early stages of Kohlis Test career Dhoni seemed to bat better on foreign pitches especially in SENA countries. During a Test match between India and New Zealand in 2014 former fast bowler Neil Wagner revealed that he troubled Kohli with short-pitched bowling but Dhoni was playing them with ease. Wagners strategy against Kohli Wagner said I remember this Test match the pitch was flat but there was a little bounce in it. I bowled some bouncers and especially Virat Kohli looked a little confused. He was not able to decide whether to play the ball or leave it. He tried to play a shot and the ball took the edge and went into the hands of BJ Watling. Auckland Test and Indias defeat This match was in Auckland where New Zealand set a target of 407 runs for India in the fourth innings. Kohli handled the innings by scoring 67 runs. At one time Indias score was 268/5 and there were hopes of victory. After fifties from Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan Dhoni and Ravindra Jadejas 54-run partnership strengthened India. But Wagners figures of 4/62 led to India being all out for 366 runs and New Zealand won by 40 runs. Dhonis wicket and Wagners confidence Wagner recalled Dhoni and Jadeja looked like they would win the match. Dhoni did not seem bothered by the short ball. I bowled a slower bouncer and Dhoni was bowled. That moment gave me confidence and belief that it is right to trust gut feeling. Story Highlights Dhoni and Kohli have been among the most successful captains of Indian cricket. Dhoni looked more comfortable on foreign pitches in the initial phase. Wagner dismissed both Kohli and Dhoni in the 2014 Auckland Test. India lost by 40 runs due to Wagners 4 wickets.
