Happy Mondays legend Shaun Ryder has ended all trading under his performing arts company, after falling into a six-figure deficit. According to documents filed on Companies House, the entertainment business went into liquidation on August 19, which comes as a devastating blow after his music career stalled. Shaun was part of a British rock band alongside his late brother Paul, Gaz Whelan, Paul Davis, and Mark Day. Together, they found major success with platinum records and are recognised as trailblazers for their own musical sub-genre, which was dubbed "Madchester."
Shaun co-owned and directed William George Entertainment with his wife, Joanne, but now owes a total of £169,127. The Celebrity Gogglebox star set up the business in 2011, reporting its nature of business as "support activities to performing arts." It's one of three businesses listed for him on Companies House. The others are Black Grape 2015, which held £5,388 as of March 31, 2024, and SWRX, which he set up in May.
According to a statement of affairs via The Sun, £129,367 is owed in corporation tax to HMRC, while £23,919 is owed to Royal Bank of Scotland, £14,759 is owed in VAT, and £981 is owed in PAYE employee tax.
In 2023, Shaun revealed he was still having to work to fund his children's ADHD therapy and explained: "So I have six kids and five of them have it. That's why I'm always working, because I've got to pay for their f***ing therapy.
"One of my girls is a maths genius, there's traces of autism in ADHD. Not everyone's got traces of autism in the ADHD, not everyone has a bad memory."
According to the NHS, ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) in children and young people affects a person's ability to pay attention to things, have high energy levels and control their impulses.
Shaun shared: "No ADHD is the same. It's always affecting my memory.
"Even though I wasn't diagnosed until 50 odd years old, when I was at school while I was in the class I would take things and understand it, by the time the lesson had ended and I walked out that door I couldn't remember anything.
"I just didn't retain the information, and also the ADHD, with me, led to promiscuous behaviour, drugs, trouble."
The singer shares six children with four women. He most recently welcomed Pearl and Lulu, 17, with Joanne, his wife of 15 years.
He is also dad to four older kids, Jael, Coco, Joseph and Oliver, from previous relationships but rarely shares photos of his family online.
