Even a trivial mistake by airport operators can eventually prove costly. If there are dirty toilets at the airport bags are delayed or there are long queues at check-in security or immigration the airport may soon have to pay for such lapses. The Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has proposed a new regulation under which the airport’s User Development Fee could be reduced as a penalty. Who has proposed the rule for fee cuts due to service lapses? According to the Times of India(TOI) report the regulator issued a consultation paper to establish uniform performance standards for all major airports – those handling over 3.5 million passengers per year – and compliance would be tied to tariffs. Airports that perform above the standards will qualify for bonuses while airports that do not meet the standards will face penalties. Third-party audits will determine whether airports are adhering to the regulations. The proposal also includes maximum wait times for each passenger touchpoint. Also know that airport services operate as natural monopolies or in limited competition. Passengers often have few choices so this regulation is much needed. What role do cleanliness and facility availability play in this proposal? The proposed plan incorporates maximum waiting times at every point in the airport. This means the time taken for terminal entry check-in security immigration and baggage claim will be clearly defined. Other elements of the passenger experience like cleanliness availability of key facilities and the use of technology such as Digi Yatra would also be monitored. These standards are instrumental in safeguarding passenger interests enhancing accountability and promoting continuous improvement across airport operations Airports Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) stated reported Times Of India.
