Teachers Day 2025: 'National Teachers Day' will be celebrated across the country on September 5. On this day, a total of 45 teachers from the country will be honored by the President. On this day, various types of programs dedicated to teachers are also organized in schools. At the same time, gifts are also given to the teacher by the students. In such a situation, let us know which sector of engineering, research, or management has a great career for teachers and how much salary they get.

Vacancies often come in colleges for engineering, research, or management, but do you know which of these careers will be best for you? There is always a demand for professors in these sectors. Here, you get a good salary, as well as exposure through research projects, consultancy, and international conferences. Let us know what the scope is in these fields regarding qualification, salary, and promotion.

Engineering Sector
To become an Assistant Professor in Technical Colleges, you must have passed both B.Tech / B.E. and M.Tech / M.E. with a first division. If you want to become an associate or full professor in the future, then a PhD degree is mandatory. Especially in IITs or big universities, it is difficult to get a job without a PhD.

Research sector
A PhD has now become necessary for teaching or research in universities and research institutes. From 2021, the rule is that only a PhD will be valid to become an assistant professor in universities. Although candidates who pass UGC-NET or SET with a master's degree also get a chance in colleges, a PhD is necessary there too to get promotion.

Management sector
An MBA degree is mandatory in business schools and management institutes, and that too in first class. Many institutions also ask for two years of industry or teaching experience from the candidate. The importance of a PhD is also increasing here to reach higher positions in big institutions.

Salary in government and private colleges
According to the 7th Pay Commission, the starting salary of an assistant professor in government colleges and universities starts from Rs 57,700 per month. Adding dearness allowance and other allowances to this, it can reach up to Rs 75100 thousand. Salary also increases with increasing experience and promotion. Salary in private colleges is not so stable. There, the starting salary is usually between Rs 40,000 and Rs 1.2 lakh. The reputation of the college and the city determine the salary.

Promotion and career growth

Promotion in a teaching job is based on research publications and experience. Usually, after 4 to 6 years of becoming an assistant professor, one gets a chance to become a senior assistant professor, and after 8 to 10 years, an associate professor. After that, one gets the post of professor. In research-focused institutes like IITs and IIMs, if your research papers and projects are good, then the pace of promotion can be fast. On the other hand, promotion is a bit slow in small private colleges.

Research projects and income

In government and big research institutes, faculty also get research grants and industry projects. For example, JRFs who pass UGC-NET get a fellowship of about Rs 50,000 per month. Research fellows are also paid salaries in the same range in institutes like CSIR, ICAR, ICMR. The number of research projects is less in private colleges, but big institutes give faculty an opportunity to earn extra income by taking up consultancy and technical projects related to the industry.

In management institutes, especially IIMs, professors earn a lot from consultancy and corporate training. According to a report, a top IIM professor's salary is around Rs 8 lakh per year.
