Chandigarh: The Punjab government, led by Revenue, Rehabilitation and Disaster Management Minister S. Hardeep Singh Mundian, has reported extensive damage across the state due to relentless rains and flooding. The situation has severely impacted human lives, property, agriculture, livestock, and infrastructure. The government is actively working around the clock to provide immediate assistance to those affected.
Minister Mundian detailed the ongoing evacuation and relief efforts, stating that the state is facing significant challenges due to flooding. So far, 15,688 individuals have been evacuated from various districts. Notable evacuations include 5,549 from Gurdaspur, 3,321 from Ferozepur, and 2,049 from Fazilka, among others.
Relief and rehabilitation initiatives are in full swing, with 129 camps set up across Punjab to shelter displaced families. The camps are distributed as follows: 16 in Amritsar, 10 in Fazilka, and 25 in Gurdaspur, among others. The government has instructed district administrations to ensure that these centers are well-equipped with food, medical aid, and essential services.
Currently, 7,144 individuals are residing in relief camps, with the highest numbers reported in Ferozepur (3,987) and Fazilka (1,201). The floods have affected 1,044 villages across 12 districts, with Gurdaspur being the hardest hit.
According to reports, approximately 256,107 people have been impacted by the floods, with Gurdaspur reporting the highest number of affected individuals at 145,000. The floods have also resulted in the tragic loss of 29 lives across various districts.
Minister Mundian noted that multiple agencies, including the NDRF, have been deployed to assist in rescue operations. The government is committed to providing immediate relief and long-term rehabilitation for all affected families. Assessments of losses are underway to ensure timely compensation.
