The Indian Railways has signed an agreement with the State Bank of India (SBI) to provide better insurance benefits for its employees and their families the Railways Ministry said in a statement. Under this deal employees with salary accounts in SBI will now get accidental death insurance of Rs. 1 crore. This is a huge jump from the current coverage of Rs. 1.20 lakh for Group A Rs. 60000 for Group B and Rs. 30000 for Group C employees under the Central Government Employees Group Insurance Scheme (CGEGIS). The agreement also adds a new benefit i.e. Rs. 10 lakh natural death insurance for all railway employees with an SBI salary account. They won’t need to pay any premium or undergo a medical check-up to get this coverage. With nearly 7 lakh railway employees holding salary accounts in SBI officials say this partnership is a big step forward in employee welfare and shows the Railways’ commitment to taking care of its staff. The ministry said the new agreement also includes several extra insurance benefits for railway employees. These include: Air accident (death) insurance of Rs. 1.60 crore plus an additional Rs. 1 crore through the RuPay debit card. Personal accident insurance of Rs. 1 crore for permanent total disability. Personal accident insurance of up to Rs. 80 lakh for permanent partial disability. According to the ministry this MoU is focused on employee welfare and is meant to provide special benefits particularly for frontline staff in Group C and other categories.
