On Monday, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated that the United States is exploring "all possible options" for imposing sanctions on Russia, following a notable increase in its military strikes against Ukraine. He condemned Russian President Vladimir Putin's actions as "despicable."
In an interview with a media channel, Bessent expressed that the US government is reassessing its approach after Russia did not adhere to commitments made during recent significant discussions in Anchorage, Alaska, and a subsequent conversation with President Donald Trump.
He stated, "Everything is on the table. Since the historic meeting in Anchorage and the phone call, President Putin has not followed through on his intentions. Instead, he has escalated the bombing campaign in a despicable manner. Therefore, under President Trump, we will closely examine all options this week," Bessent remarked.
These comments come as Russian airstrikes intensify across Ukrainian cities, including a recent attack on Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia executed "two large-scale attacks" last week. In a post on social media, he revealed that 22 individuals, including four children, lost their lives due to a Russian strike on a residential area in Kyiv's Darnytskyi district.
Zelenskyy paid tribute to the victims at the site of the missile strike, stating, "This horrific attack resulted in the deaths of 22 people, among them four children, the youngest being under three years old. My heartfelt condolences go out to their families and loved ones."
He further noted that a total of 23 people were killed and 53 injured during the Russian assault on Kyiv that night, with eight individuals still unaccounted for. "That night, the Russians killed 23 people in Kyiv. The fate of eight remains unknown, and 53 others received necessary medical assistance. I am thankful to the first responders, police, medical staff, and all emergency services for their efforts in aiding those affected," he added. Zelenskyy called on the global community to hold Russia "accountable" for its actions, accusing Moscow of resorting to military force instead of diplomatic solutions.
