Kolkata: Trinamool Congress-led West Bengal government on Tuesday has moved a resolution in West Bengal assembly condemning atrocities against Bengali speaking migrants in BJP ruled states.

The resolution was moved by state minister for Parliamentary Affairs Sobhondeb Chattopadhyay today under Rule 169.

Chattopadhyay, after reading the resolution, said, “Bengali-speaking are being harassed in various outside states (BJP ruled states). As per Indian Constitution’s fundamental rights, Indian citizens can stay in any state.”

“There is an attempt to remove the words ‘secular’ and ‘socialist’ from the Indian Constitution. Efforts are being made to implement Special Intensive Revision (SIR) through various ways, Chattopadhyay stated, during his opening speech after the resolution was moved.

Chief whip of Opposition BJP Shankar Ghosh said the resolution has been brought due to political reasons and there are attempts of religious divisiveness by the ruling party. He questioned in the floor of the House, if “Hargonbindo Das and his son Chandan Das, who were brutally murdered in Murshidabad violence and riots were not Bengalis”.

Trinamool senior minister & Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim pointed out that 291million people speak in Bengali and Bengal is a language in the seventh position as per usage after Hindi. He spoke about “hate-politics” by RSS and elaborated on how the Bengali-speaking people are tortured in BJP-ruled states.

State Minister for Finance (Independent charge) Chandrima Bhattacharya spoke about how notice are being sent to people in the bordering parts of Bengal by the Assam Tribunal. She also mentioned that it is Bengal which has received the status of Classical Language by the Centre.

He claimed that the Indian government loves the Bengalis.

Chattopadhyay said in the House that he will bring a Privilege Motion against certain comments made by BJP MLA Asim Sarkar. Speaking to ET, Chattopadhyay said, “I have written to the Speaker seeking details about my speech. I will receive all details on September 4. I will review what I have said and if needed a privilege motion will be brought, though there is only one day left in this session.”
