Adelaide, Sept 3:Australian fast bowler Mitchell Starc, a pivotal figure in the national team’s recent successes, has announced his retirement from T20 International cricket. The decision, made at the age of 35, is a strategic move to prolong his career in the longer formats of the game, with a packed international schedule on the horizon.

In a statement, Starc confirmed that Test cricket remains his “highest priority.” He stated, “I have loved every minute of every T20 game I have played for Australia, particularly the 2021 World Cup, not just because we won but the incredible group and the fun along the way.” He emphasized that stepping away from T20Is is “my best way forward to remain fresh, fit and at my best” for future campaigns, including the upcoming Indian Test tour, the Ashes, and the 2027 ODI World Cup.

Starc’s retirement leaves a significant void in Australia’s T20 attack. The left-arm pacer ends his career in the format as the nation’s most prolific fast bowler, with 79 wickets from 65 matches at an economy rate of 7.74. Only leg-spinner Adam Zampa has more wickets for Australia in T20Is. Starc’s ability to swing the new ball at express pace and his mastery of the death overs made him a unique and highly valuable asset.

The decision also provides an opportunity for the next generation of Australian fast bowlers to step up and prepare for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Selectors will look to players like Ben Dwarshuis and Spencer Johnson to help fill the gap left by Starc’s departure.

Cricket Australia’s chief selector, George Bailey, paid tribute to Starc, stating, “Mitch should be incredibly proud of his T20 career for Australia. He was an integral member of the 2021 World Cup winning side and, as across all his cricket, had a great skill for blowing games open with his wicket-taking ability.” Bailey noted that while a like-for-like replacement is impossible to find, the move is a testament to Starc’s team-first mentality.
