Premier League superstars are increasingly relying on ferocious guard dogs to protect their homes from violent robbery gangs. High-profile players have been targeted by organised crime gangs who are not deterred by traditional alarm systems. The founder of one leading guard dog training company says with their homes vulnerable whilst they are away playing matches - enabling thieves to easily track their movements - it's little wonder so many Premier League footballers are now buying what he calls "protective" dog breeds to guard their homes.

However, he warns that it is vital that the sporting stars take proper advice before making a purchase. This comes after England and Nottingham Forest footballer, Morgan Gibbs-White, faces an upcoming court date after failing to register a banned XL Bully dog before a set deadline.

Premier League footballers who have been victims of burglary and robbery include Jack Grealish, Raheem Sterling, Joao Cancelo, Reece James, Robin Olsen, Ashley Cole, Fabinho, Wayne Rooney, Tom Cleverley, and Alexander Isak. These incidents often involve gangs targeting players for their wealth, with some victims suffering violent confrontations and the theft of valuable items like jewellery, cars, and medals.

Richard Douglas, the co-founder of Chaperone K9, spoke exclusively to betting firm Tipman Tips about why footballers are turning to guard dogs for protection, and highlighted the value of using only professionally trained breeds to perform this role.

He said: "In recent years, an increasing number of Premier League footballers have turned to professionally trained protection dogs as a key part of their personal and family security.

"While protection is a top priority, these dogs are far more than just security tools. Breeds like German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Dobermans, and Cane Corsos are incredibly loyal, intelligent, and intuitive. When properly trained, these breeds offer unmatched obedience and control, which makes them safe, stable additions to family home life.

"The German Shepherd is the most popular breed among Chaperone K9 clients, which has included famous footballers like John Terry, Jamie Vardy, Marcus Rashford, and more.

"Some of the footballers we have worked with have voiced concerns about rising security risks, and were looking for a solution that offered robust protection without compromising the family dynamic. A dog that could serve as both a formidable protector, and a loyal, affectionate companion.

"For some, it was a response to personal experiences with crime. For others, it has simply been about peace of mind and a way to feel secure while enjoying the companionship of welcoming a highly-trained animal into their family.

"The German Shepherd is popular because it offers the ideal mix of power, presence, and trainability. Meanwhile, others are drawn to the Belgian Malinois for its athleticism and drive, or the Rottweiler, for its imposing look paired with surprising gentleness at home.

"Every person is different, and while some people are drawn to specific breeds, it is our role as professional trainers to educate them and help them understand what owning a dog of this nature really means day-to-day. It's about matching the right dog to the right lifestyle."
