Liverpool's new £125million signing Alexander Isak will have his fitness closely monitored while on international duty with Sweden. The striker, who recently completed a high-profile transfer to Anfield following a summer-long saga, has joined his national team for World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Kosovo.
However, there are questions over how much of a role Isak will play. The 25-year-old has been training alone for the past few months, having missed Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia and not played since the final Premier League match of last season.
Sweden's manager, Jon Dahl Tomasson, has assured that they won't take any unnecessary risks with Isak. "We will not do any stupid things with him," he said.
"He has not had a pre-season with lots of training and matches. He cannot play 90 minutes. We have a plan. He is smiling and happy to be here."
Isak, who boasts 16 goals in 52 appearances for Sweden, is understandably a concern for Liverpool, who just days ago paid a record-breaking British fee for his services.
"We always have very good communication with the clubs," Tomasson stated. "I have spoken to their manager. Our doctor has spoken to their doctor. Our physio Ben [Rosen] has spoken to their physio.
"I am happy that the guy is here. It doesn't matter where the players play as long as they play and that they are happy - and he is extremely happy."
Tomasson, the former Blackburn boss, is keen to utilise his talented strike force, which includes Viktor Gyokeres in addition to Isak.
"When I started, there was a lot of noise about those two. 'Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres cannot play together,'" Tomasson added. "Of course they can.
"Great players can always play together. It's my task as the coach to get the right scenery where they can perform and express themselves. And they've been great so far.
"Great characters, great personalities, lovely boys to work with. And they like to score goals. They're living for goals."
