Kidney Stones On The Rise: Doctor Shares Lifestyle Changes That Can Lower Risk
admin September 05, 2025 12:22 AM
Kidney stones, previously a relatively rare medical condition, are increasingly common among all age groups. Sedentary lifestyles, unhealthy eating habits, dehydration, and increased rates of obesity have all played a role in this increase.
Typically presenting with severe back or abdominal pain, nausea and urination difficulty, kidney stones can be very uncomfortable and, if not treated, can even be dangerous. While surgery and other treatments are available, prevention is the best way to deal with this painful and potentially dangerous condition. The good news is that small but regular lifestyle modifications can significantly lower the risk of kidney stone formation. From drinking enough water to eating thoughtful meals, minor changes in daily habits can protect kidney health in the long term. Physicians point out that prevention is all about awareness and proactive care, as most risk factors are under our control. In conversation with The Daily Jagran, Dr Khizar Raoof Mohammed, Head Minimal Invasive Urology, Arete Hospitals, shares the causes behind the increasing risk of kidney stones, early signs and lifestyle changes to lower the risk. Why Are Stones Increasing? The most common reason is a lack of water. Many people sip endless cups of tea, coffee, or fizzy drinks instead of plain water. Dr Khizar Raoof states, "This makes the urine dense and gives minerals a chance to form crystals." A diet full of salt, fried snacks, processed food, and excessive meat adds to the risk. Long desk hours, erratic meals, and high heat exposure, especially in our climate, make matters worse. Warning Signs You Must Not Ignore The pain of a stone is unforgettable: sudden, severe, and sometimes spreading to the groin. Dr Khizar Raoof mentions, "Some people also notice blood in the urine, nausea, or the urge to urinate repeatedly. These are signals not to be brushed aside." Left unchecked, stones can injure the kidney and impair its function permanently. Rethink Your Diet: Go easy on salt, packaged snacks, and red meat; load up on fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Skip Sugary Drinks: Sodas and boxed juices raise the risk. Keep Moving: Regular activity supports circulation and kidney health. Regular Check-Ups: Essential if you've had stones before. Kidney stones can bring a person to their knees with pain, but they are not inevitable. Prevention lies in simple, consistent choices: keep yourself hydrated, eat in balance, and respect your body's signals. By acting early, many of my patients have avoided repeat episodes or surgery. The kidneys stay healthy not through big changes, but through simple daily care.
