As the festive season continues across India, bank customers should take note of upcoming holidays that could affect their transactions and branch visits. Following Friday’s closures in several states, banks in selected regions will once again remain shut on Saturday, September 6, 2025, due to Eid-e-Milad and Indrajatra celebrations.
According to the official bank holiday calendar, banks will remain closed on Saturday in Jammu, Raipur, Gangtok, and Srinagar. These closures are being observed in connection with two significant cultural and religious occasions:
Eid-e-Milad (Mawlid al-Nabi): Celebrated as the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad, the day is marked with prayers, processions, and community gatherings. Mosques are decorated, the teachings of the Prophet are remembered, and charitable acts are performed.
Indrajatra Festival: Primarily observed in Nepal and parts of North and Northeast India, Indrajatra is dedicated to Lord Indra, the Hindu god of rain and harvest. The festival includes traditional dances, processions, and rituals.
For residents of these states, bank services at physical branches will not be available. However, digital banking services including UPI, net banking, and mobile apps will continue to function normally.
On Friday, September 5, 2025, banks in several cities including Ahmedabad, Mumbai, Delhi, and Hyderabad remained closed for Eid-e-Milad and Thiruvonam (Onam festival in Kerala). Onam, Kerala’s most important harvest festival, is celebrated in honor of King Mahabali and includes grand feasts, cultural performances, and traditional rituals.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issues a state-wise holiday schedule every year. While some holidays are observed nationwide, many depend on regional festivals. Here are the key upcoming holidays in September 2025:
September 6 (Saturday): Eid-e-Milad / Indrajatra – Gangtok, Jammu, Raipur, Srinagar
September 12 (Friday): Post-Eid Friday – Jammu and Srinagar
September 22 (Monday): Navratri Sthapana – Jaipur
September 23 (Tuesday): Maharaja Hari Singh Jayanti – Jammu and Srinagar
September 29 (Monday): Maha Saptami / Durga Puja – Agartala, Gangtok, Kolkata
September 30 (Tuesday): Maha Ashtami / Durga Puja – Agartala, Bhubaneswar, Guwahati, Kolkata, Patna, Ranchi
In addition to these festival holidays, the usual weekly offs will also apply:
September 7 (Sunday)
September 13 (Second Saturday)
September 14 (Sunday)
September 21 (Sunday)
September 27 (Fourth Saturday)
September 28 (Sunday)
Bank holidays often impact cash deposits, withdrawals, cheque clearances, and loan-related work at branches. Customers planning urgent visits are advised to check the local holiday list to avoid inconvenience. Since September 6 is also the first Saturday of the month, banks are generally open on this day in most states. However, due to festival-specific holidays, branches in the affected states will remain closed.
With multiple religious and cultural festivals lined up in September, bank holidays are spread across different dates and states. Customers in Jammu, Raipur, Gangtok, and Srinagar must note that their local bank branches will remain closed on Saturday, September 6. Those in other parts of the country can expect regular banking services.
To avoid disruptions, it is advisable to complete important branch-related transactions in advance or rely on online and digital banking facilities, which remain operational round the clock.
