When Rang De Basanti released in 2006, it was more than just a film, it became a cultural revolution that deeply influenced a generation of young Indians. Its themes of patriotism, rebellion and friendship struck a chord far beyond cinema halls. Yet, as actress Soha Ali Khan recently revealed, the film’s journey to success was far from guaranteed.

In an interview, Soha admitted that no one involved in the project initially expected it to achieve such massive success or touch people so profoundly. Even with Aamir Khan leading the cast, the producers were not fully confident about its box office performance. She recalled how, during promotions, the producers actually asked the actors to return some of their fees because they feared the film would not do well.

Surprisingly, the cast agreed without much hesitation, not realising at the time that the film would go on to become a movement. For Soha, it was a turning point in her career, something she believes will always remain a highlight of her professional journey.

The making of the film was as memorable as its reception. The ensemble cast, which included Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan, Siddharth, Sharman Joshi, Alice Patten, Atul Kulkarni and Soha herself, spent more than a year shooting across different locations in India, from Punjab and Rajasthan to Delhi and Mumbai.

The team often worked long hours, sometimes waiting for half a day while cinematographer Binod Pradhan set up the perfect lighting for a shot. Soha described those days as deeply collaborative, with the cast bonding closely and forming friendships that felt permanent at the time, even though many of them eventually drifted apart over the years, as life often makes happen.

One of the most significant changes during production came with the film’s climax. Director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra had originally envisioned a darker ending where the protagonists ass@ssinate the Defence Minister and lose their lives. However, Aamir Khan suggested an alternative inspired by a story he had written years earlier. His version involved the characters seizing control of a television studio to speak directly to the public, a scene that aligned more powerfully with the film’s themes of awakening and activism. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra embraced the idea and the revised climax became one of the most impactful sequences of the film.

In the end, the risk paid off spectacularly. Rang De Basanti was not only a commercial success but also an artistic triumph that redefined how Bollywood could inspire real-life conversations and change. It left behind a legacy that elevated the careers of its actors and creators while setting a benchmark for storytelling with purpose.

Nearly two decades later, the film remains a shining example of how cinema, despite initial doubts and challenges, can transcend entertainment to become a movement in itself.
