Bank Operations on Ganesh Visarjan

Ganesh Visarjan is being celebrated with great fervor across Maharashtra and other regions of India on Saturday, September 6. If you're curious about the status of bank operations today, here's the clarification: banks are operational nationwide, although specific holidays may differ by state.

In Gangtok, the capital of Sikkim, banks will be closed on Saturday, September 6, 2025, in observance of Id-e-Milad (Milad-Un-Nabi)/Indrajatra, according to the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) holiday calendar for each state. Customers are encouraged to verify the complete list of bank holidays prior to their visit.

This year, Ganesh Visarjan, which is the immersion ceremony conducted on Anant Chaturdashi, coincides with September 6, the first Saturday of the month. The festivities will be particularly prominent in Maharashtra.

Bank holidays are outlined in the RBI's annual holiday calendar under the Negotiable Instruments Act, which regulates transactions involving cheques and promissory notes. Consequently, such transactions cannot be processed on these designated days.

Eid-e-Milad, also referred to as Milad-un-Nabi, commemorates the birth of Prophet Muhammad, a significant figure in Islam. Sunnis celebrate it on the 12th of Rabi al-awwal, while Shi'as observe it on the 17th.

Additionally, the Indrajatra festival pays tribute to Lord Indra, the Rain God, marking the conclusion of the harvest season. This festival is primarily celebrated in Nepal's Kathmandu Valley, with smaller observances in Sikkim.

Upcoming Bank Holidays

The next nationwide bank holiday is scheduled for Sunday, September 7. In Mumbai, banks will also be closed on Monday, September 8, as the Eid-e-Milad holiday was rescheduled from September 5 due to the community's decision to hold the procession on that date.
