Morten Hjulmand opted to remain at Sporting CP for another campaign, despite reportedly attracting interest from Manchester United over the summer - but the star is anticipated to depart Portugal next year. United weren't the sole club connected with the Denmark midfielder, who skippers Rui Borges' side.

A potential reunion with former Sporting boss Ruben Amorim was suggested, while Juventus also pressed for a transfer after selling Douglas Luiz.

According to club president Federico Verandas - via Portuguese publication A Bola - Hjulmand received several proposals and was lost to Italy before Sporting officials persuaded him to stay and secured his commitment for another year.

The publication also claims that Sporting intend to position Francisco Trincao in the frontline to take over the captain's armband next season, expecting this to be Hjulmand's final campaign in Lisbon.

United examined alternative options when it became apparent Sporting were unwilling to part with their skipper for less than his £69million release clause.

That clause is now believed to have lapsed, but Hjulmand - who remains under contract until 2028 - is not anticipated to depart for a bargain price.

He would still likely cost less than Carlos Baleba, though, even if Brighton were to reduce their nine-figure valuation.

Hjulmand, 26, has played for Sporting in all four of their Primeira Liga matches this season.

Borges' squad claimed victory in the first three fixtures of their title defence, but suffered defeat at home to Porto in their most recent outing.

He also completed the full 90 minutes for Denmark in their home draw against Scotland on Friday night, with United's wing-back Patrick Dorgu remaining on the bench. Denmark returned to the pitch on Monday night as they took on Greece in Piraeus.

United are enjoying a break from action during the international break like their rivals are.

But the Red Devils can look forward to returning to the pitch when they travel to Manchester City for a huge Premier League derby on Sunday.
