While the summer transfer window may have only be closed for just a few days, eyes for Chelsea and their Premier Leaguerivals will already be turning to the January window and the possible business that could be done halfway through the campaign.
For the Blues, the summer window was a pretty successful one. Enzo Maresca added nine new players to his squad, although both Mamadou Sarr and Kendry Paez will spend the season on loan with Strasbourg.
Other new arrivals saw Facundo Bounanotte, Dario Essugo, Etevao, Liam Delap, Jorrel Hato, Alejandro Garnacho, Jamie Gittens and Joao Pedro all complete moves to Stamford Bridge.

However, there was some drama in terms of the striker position in the final days of the transfer window. With Nicolas Jackson on the verge of completing a loan move to Bayern Munich, injury toLiam Delap in the Premier League clash against Fulham led to Chelsea seemingly pulling the plug on the move.
However, with the player and his representatives pushing for it to go through, a renegotiation with Bayern for the deal to include an obligation to buy in the deal if certain criteria are met, led to the striker completing the transfer on deadline day.
While this was happening, Chelsea recalled fellow forward Marc Guiu from his loan spell with Premier League rivals Sunderland. The 19-year-old had played just three times for the Black Cats after joining on a temporary deal earlier in the summer.
The injury to Delap, plus the exit of Jackson means that Maresca is short on options in the short term while the former recovers. Pedro is currently first choice, with the recalled Guiu providing backup.
The one injury probably shows the need for reinforcements in the January window. Bringing another striker into the club will also bring the added benefit of being able to send Guiu out on loan again for the second half of the season as he looks to build up his experience.
So, who could Chelsea turn to? One option could be Juventus’ Dusan Vlahovic. The 25-year-old will have just six months remaining on his contract when the January window comes around, Chelsea could therefore potentially get him in a cut-price deal.
If they are willing to wait six months, the club could also enter pre-contract negotiations with the striker when the January window opens with a view to signing him on a free transfer next summer. The Blues will have the chance to see the striker up close on Tuesday night when his Serbia side take on England in a World Cup qualifier (7.45pm kick-off).
Another striking option they could look out for in that match is England’s Ollie Watkins. The forward is currently with Aston Villa but there has been a lot of talk about a potential move away from Villa Park with the likes of Arsenal and Manchester United linked with an interest.
It’s well known that Villa have been hampered by the Profitability and Sustainability rules (PSR) over the last couple of transfer windows. Therefore cashing in on Watkins in January would give them a financial boost.
Chelsea are also likely to have a good relationship with Villa given recent dealings between the two clubs over Axel Disasi. It’s something that the Blues could look to take advantage of, with Watkins a proven goalscorer in the Premier League and more than able to provide competition in Chelsea’s striking department.
As well as a striker there is potential work to do at the other end of the pitch too. There has been questions over goalkeeper Robert Sanchez for sometime with him making some high profile mistakes last season.
While no replacement was bought in during the summer window, football.london understands that Chelsea did make a move for AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan, but ended up being priced out of a move.
The 30-year-old ended up staying with AC Milan but is now entering the final year of his contract with the Serie A Club. Like with Vlahovic it’s a situation that Chelsea could look to take advantage of.
With just six months remaining on his contract when the transfer window re-opens, Chelsea could enter pre-contract negotiations with the player over a free transfer in the summer. They could also potentially re-open negotiations with AC Milan over trying to get a cut-price deal for the player.
