On Tuesday, Jammu and Kashmir's Chief Minister Umar Abdullah expressed that it would be beneficial if Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the Union Territory following the assessment of flood and landslide damages by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. Abdullah noted that Shah had previously visited Jammu and Kashmir to evaluate the impact of the floods and had chaired a review meeting in Jammu. He emphasized that a visit from Prime Minister Modi would be highly advantageous.
Abdullah further mentioned that it is reassuring to see central teams assessing the damage caused by heavy rainfall and landslides in Jammu and Kashmir. Amit Shah was in Jammu from September 1 to 2 to survey the situation following severe weather events, including cloudbursts and landslides. During his visit, he met with flood-affected residents in the Mangu Chak village and inspected the Tawi bridge at Vikram Chowk, as well as homes damaged by flooding. The central government has allocated ₹209 crores for the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF).
Earlier, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha visited Thard village in Udhampur to review ongoing reconstruction efforts on National Highway-44. The highway has been completely closed for the past eight days due to significant landslides caused by recent heavy rains. The regional officer of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), R.S. Yadav, informed the Lieutenant Governor about the deployment of personnel and machinery for the swift restoration of the highway. It was reported that the team is working around the clock to reopen one lane for traffic soon. The Lieutenant Governor also interacted with affected families to inquire about their well-being.
Additionally, the Lieutenant Governor visited a health camp organized by the health department at the Gujjar Bakarwal hostel in Udhampur, where he inspected the health facilities provided for flood-affected families. Accompanying him were various officials, including Balwant Singh Mankotia, MLA from Chenani; Pawan Kumar Gupta, MLA from Udhampur West; Ramesh Kumar, Divisional Commissioner of Jammu; and other senior officials.
