Apple has reimagined smartphone photography with the iPhone 17 Airwhich comes equipped with a single, large 48MP Fusion camera. Instead of relying on multiple rear lenses, Apple is introducing a more intelligent, AI-driven camera system designed to deliver professional-grade results through computational photography.
The 48MP Fusion main sensor offers multiple discrete crop modes, giving users the equivalent of having four lenses in their pocket—26mm, 28mm, 35mm, and 52mm focal lengths—without the need for separate hardware. This is enabled by Apple’s new AI-heavy 2x pipelinewhich enhances sharpness, depth, and colour accuracy while maintaining natural detail.
Photos are now captured in 24MP by defaultdelivering higher resolution for everyday shots. The camera system also supports advanced features including Dual Capture, Center Stage on the front camera, next-generation portraits, Action Mode for stabilised video, and Dolby Vision 4K60 recording. Paired with Audio Mix with Spatial Audiocreators also get more immersive sound control while shooting.
By simplifying the hardware and amplifying computational photography, the iPhone 17 Air’s camera is positioned as both powerful and creator-friendly, offering flexibility without the bulk of multiple lenses. It underscores Apple’s vision of the Air as a balance between slim design and cutting-edge imaging technology.
