Sources indicate that the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) is set to take charge of the 'Z+' security detail for India's Vice President. Under this new arrangement, armed commandos from the CRPF will be responsible for the Vice President's protection, ensuring a high level of security.
This transition follows an oral directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), which has tasked the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) with the responsibility of providing round-the-clock personal security for the country's second-highest constitutional office. The decision comes after the MHA reassessed potential threats, leading to instructions for the CRPF, although a formal written order has yet to be issued.
As part of the layered security protocols, the Delhi Police will continue to manage entry control, perimeter duties, and external security, while the CRPF will handle close protection responsibilities. Sources suggest that the CRPF may formally assume these duties by Wednesday.
'Z+' is one of the highest security classifications in India, involving the deployment of over 55 armed personnel, including commandos, escorts, and support staff. Those assigned to this category receive training for counter-terrorism operations, close combat, evacuation drills, and responses to high-risk situations.
These adjustments are being made in accordance with the revised Blue Book standards, which outline comprehensive security guidelines for the protection of top constitutional officials. The CRPF already provides security for several high-risk dignitaries and will now extend the same level of protection to the Vice President.
It is noteworthy that CP Radhakrishnan has been elected as India's 15th Vice President. His extensive political and administrative experience will be beneficial in his role as the ex-officio Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. Election officer PC Modi announced that Radhakrishnan secured 452 votes to win the Vice Presidential election, while opposition candidate B Sudarshan Reddy received 300 votes. The vote count indicated some cross-voting in favor of Radhakrishnan, with BJP leaders claiming that at least 15 opposition members voted for the NDA candidate.
