Nuno accused of 'getting himself sacked' after attack on Nottingham Forest chief

Teddy Sheringham has claimed Nuno Espirito Santo “knew what he was doing” by attacking the club’s Greek owner before his sacking by Nottingham Forest. The Portuguese coach publicly declared that his relationship with Evangelos Marinakis had broken down last month.

The billionaire owner replaced Nuno with Ange Postecoglou this week. And former Forest and Spurs striker Sheringham said: “I think the writing was on the wall once he had his little outburst about not having the same relationship with his chairman. I think he knew what he was doing so that pushed the right buttons for him to leave the club.”

The ex-England striker also believes the City Ground club have found a good replacement in Aussie Postecoglou. He said: “Good luck to him. I look back on Ange coming in at Tottenham and he said he was going to win something. I know how difficult it is to win something when you're a professional footballer. There's not a lot to go for every season and to win something when he said he was going to, I think hats off to him. I'm delighted he's got another job.

“I was very disappointed for him when he lost the Tottenham job. Everyone talks about the bad position in the league, but that didn't enter my mind. He put all his eggs in one basket to win something, and he won something, and that's what Tottenham had been craving has gone wrong. I think he’ll do well at Forest.

“I'm sure after two years in the Premier League, he's learned a little bit as well, and he might have to adjust, but some of the football that Tottenham played last year was sensational at times in the last two years. So, you know, I wish Ange luck. I think he’ll be all right.”

Daniel Levy left Tottenham this week after 24 years as chairman which yielded two trophies, including the Europa League in May.

Speaking after playing the pro-am at the BMW PGA at Wentworth, Sheringham said: “Who knows what's going to happen there, whether it's good or bad or what. I've been a good advocate of his over the years and I think he's done fantastic for the club. But you always want better. You always want more trophies, I suppose. And you know, if that's what the change is for, to improve, then so be it.

“They have just won something, so they are on the right path. You don’t know the ins and outs of what has gone on so it will be interesting to see what happens in the near future.”
