Have you ever felt a shock in the body suddenly while sleeping? As soon as you close your eyes and go to sleep, then suddenly there is a strange act in the feet, chest or whole body.

Sometimes it is light, sometimes so fast that sleep opens. Most people ignore it as tired, but according to experts it can also be a sign of a serious health problem. Sleep Medicine Expert Dr. Ajit Kumar at GTB Hospital in Delhi says that if a person feels moving with hands and feet in his sleep, it is not right to ignore it by considering it just a stir of sleep. It can also be an initial sign of a major problem from the body.

Why do these shocks come? According to Dr. Ajit Kumar, this problem usually occurs when the coordination between the brain and the nervous system is disturbed. Such shocks can also be caused by lack of sleep, excess caffeine intake, lack of electrolytes (such as magnesium, calcium or potassium). However, if this problem is happening frequently, then some serious neurological diseases may also be hidden behind it.

Sleep myoclonus or restless leg syndrome? According to experts, the problem of sleep shaking may be associated with sleep myoclonus or restless leg syndrome (RLS). Sleep Myoclonus has a sudden rapid shock in any part of the body during sleep. The restless leg syndrome has a sharp desire to stretch, prick or move the feet, affecting sleep. If these symptoms are ignored, it can later turn into conditions such as Parkinson's disease, nerve damage, or epilepsy.

Effect of medicines and food In some cases these shocks are also seen as a side effect of sleeping pills or antidepressants. At the same time, lack of essential minerals in the body (such as magnesium, potassium) can also cause abnormal muscle movement.

When should the doctor go? If this problem is happening many times a week and symptoms like fatigue, dizziness, sleep during the day or not focusing, then it is very important to consult a doctor. In such cases, checks like blood test, neurological exam and sleep study should be done.
