Rep. Ilhan Omar inducted into Southside ‘Hall of Heroes’ after deadly Minneapolis school shooting
Three weeks after a deadly mass shooting shook a Minneapolis community, Rep. Ilhan Omar was inducted into the Southside “Heroes Hall” at the Sabathani Community Center, a program recognizing local leaders who have shaped South Minneapolis. Organizers described the hall as part of Sabathani’s Living History Museum, designed to preserve the voices and stories of community leaders.

Rep. Ilhan Omar posted on X:

“I am beyond honored to be inducted into the 2025 Sabathani's Southside Hall of Heroes for my work in Congress. I’ll keep fighting every single day to build a brighter, stronger Minnesota for future generations. ?❤️”

A community still grieving

The recognition came just one day after a mass shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in south Minneapolis left two children dead and at least 17 others injured. Authorities said the gunman, 23-year-old Robin Westman, opened fire through church windows during a morning Mass on Aug. 27 before turning the gun on himself. Investigators examined the attack as a potential hate crime and act of domestic terrorism.

Omar, who represents the district where the attack occurred, was among the first elected officials to respond publicly. “I am beyond heartbroken over the tragic news of the shooting at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis,” she wrote on social media. “I am praying for all the families impacted by this horrific tragedy.”

The following week, Omar and the Minnesota congressional delegation introduced a House resolution honoring the victims, first responders, and the broader community. She also led a moment of silence on the House floor.
