Bhubaneswar: A youth, who had allegedly set himself on fire in Odisha’s Berhampur city two days ago, died while undergoing treatment at AIIMS-Bhubaneswar.

The deceased, identified as Suraj Sahu (25), had set himself ablaze after pouring petrol at Mentu Square under Berhampur Bada Bazar police limits. The incident took place on World Suicide Prevention Day on Wednesday.

Sahu reportedly made the self-immolation attempt over some family issues and sustained 80 per cent burns.

Prior to taking the extreme step. Suraj had reportedly posted a cryptic message on social media. “If something happens to me, no one is responsible,” his Instagram update read.

He was immediately rushed to the Burn Ward of MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur.

Sahu was later shifted to AIIMS-Bhubaneswar after his condition deteriorated. The youth died while undergoing treatment at the premier healthcare institute on Friday.

Though the reason behind the drastic step taken by the youth remains unclear, police interrogated his family members to ascertain the circumstances leading to the incident.
