The three -day Jitiya fast starts from the seventh date of Krishna Paksha of Ashwin month, Nirjala fast is observed on Ashtami date and fast is observed on Navami Tithi.
Jitiya fast is being observed on Sunday, 14 September. According to religious beliefs, women who observe Jitiya fast should definitely recite this story. It is said that without reciting this story, there is no complete fruit of fast. In such a situation, let us read the story of Jitiya Vrat.
According to religious beliefs, Jitiya Vrat is mainly done to wish the child happy, healthy and long life. On this day, all the mothers keep this difficult nirjala fast for the safety and long life of their children. This fast protects the child by the grace of Lord Krishna and the obstacles of his life are removed.
There are mainly two mythological stories about Jitiya Vrat, one of which is related to Mahabharata, in which Lord Krishna revived the fetus of Uttara after being dead from Brahmastra. At the same time, the second story is of an eagle and jackal, who attains child happiness from the glory of fasting in a previous birth and since then mothers do this fast for their children.
According to mythological belief, after the death of Dronacharya in the Mahabharata war, his son Ashwatthama came in anger and ran Brahmastra, causing Abhimanyu's wife to die in the womb of Uttara. When Lord Krishna came to know about this, he again revived Uttara's dead baby with his divine power and named him Jeevatrika. Since then, mothers started fasting for the long life and protection of their children.
According to the legend, once a eagle and a female jackal saw women observing Jitiya fast and also wished to observe this fast. When hungry, Siyarin ate the flesh of a dead animal during the fast, while the eagle observed the fast with full dedication. In the next life, eagle had many sons and they all survived, but they used to die only after the birth of Jackal's children.
Unhappy with the death of his children, when the jackal asked the eagle the reason for this, he came to know the importance of the fast of previous birth. Then Siyarin also duly observed Jitiya fast, after which he also got a son who remained healthy throughout his life. For this reason, the tradition of Jitiya fast started for child happiness.
