New Delhi: Minakshi Hooda gave India its second gold medal at the World Boxing Championships in Livepool on Sunday after Jaismine Lamboria claimed the country’s first medal at the top event.
A day after Jaismine outboxed Paris Olympics silver medallist Poland’s Julia Szeremeta of Poland in the 57kg final, Minakshi outpunched Paris Games bronze medal winner Kazakshtan’s Nazym Kyzaibay in the 48kg title round.
Like Jaismine, Minakshi won by a comprehensive 4-1 margin as Nupur Sheoran (80+kg) and Pooja Rani (80kg) claimed silver and bronze medals respectively in non-Olympic weight categories.
On debut, Minakshi exacted revenge for losing to her opponent in the World Cup in July as India finished the campaign with four medals, their best return in an overseas edition of the event.
Minakshi and Jaismine entered an elite list of Indian boxing world champions, led by six-time winner Mary Kom (2002, 2005, 2006, 2008, 2010 and 2018), two-time champ Nikhat Zareen (2022 and 2023), Sarita Devi (2006), Jenny RL (2006), Lekha KC (2006), Nitu Ghanghas (2023), Lovlina Borgohain (2023) and Saweety Boora (2023).
In her third appearance at Worlds, Jaismine took time to size up her opponent and trailed 2-3 after the first round. The 24-year-old used her greater height and reach to fightback in the second round.
“I have no words to describe how I am feeling. I had got out in the quarterfinals in the previous two Worlds, but I got the boost from the World Cup win and I decided I want to win one-sided matches. I just concentrated on my strategy and game,” Jaismine told PTI.
Nupur lost 2-3 to Poland’s Agata Kaczmarska despite having a height advantage. She could not impose herself on her opponent in spite of getting a bright start.
Kaczmarska toook control as the bout progressed and landed a decisive blow in the final round when she unleashed an uppercut to convince the judges.
Pooja went down to local boxer Emily Asquith 1-4 in the 80kg semi-finals to settle for bronze.
